Mayer Rising Artists Festival set for Friday and Saturday
For the second year in a row, area residents will have the opportunity to view art created by local artists and purchase items that are on display.
The Mayer Rising Artists Festival will take place at the Mayer Community Center Friday, July 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The goal of the event is to showcase the work of local artists, according to City Administrator Luayn Murphy.
The event will feature “a real variety” of media again this year, Murphy said.
Among the artists who have signed up are a quilter, a jeweler, a wood carver, a photographer, fiber and leather workers, and a person who paints on silk.
This year, all of the billboards and posters were designed by first through fourth grade students in Christine Wik’s art class at Watertown Mayer Elementary School.
There will also be 120 pieces of art created by the students displayed at the show.
A member of the Mayer Arts Council found a grant, and the city applied for and was awarded a grant through the Minnesota Regional Arts Council to organize and promote the event.
“It was a group effort,” Murphy said.

Mayer organizations offer a great variety of events and a good time every year.
In both spring and fall, for example, you can enjoy the Mayer Fire Department’s all-you-can-eat fish fry at the Mayer Community Center. The fall fish fry is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 26. The spring fish fry is set for Sunday, April 5.
Mayer starts the year by opening its parks. Discovery Park has brand new playground equipment.
Baseball will keep you entertained in the summer. The Mayer Baseball Club not only plays games in which to participate or watch, but also hosts an annual Beef Sunday during one of the games in July. Great prizes are donated by local businesses.
Watertown/Mayer Community recreation offers t-ball in the summer and soccer in the fall for area youth. Contact the Watertown/Mayer Community Ed. to enroll.
Each summer, Lutheran High School of Mayer hosts a rummage sale, tentatively scheduled for June 16-18, 2009. The annual event draws people from neighboring communities, and includes a bake sale. The sale is in its 40th year. Proceeds from the annual event go towards updating the school.
Lutheran High School also sponsors a golf tournament, in September, at Shadowbrooke Golf Course of Lester Prairie. The annual tournament benefits technology advancements at the school, and is open to foursome teams. Anyone interested in participating may contact the school.
This year’s high school musical will be Nov. 21-23. The school will also host concerts throughout the year. A Christmas concert is set for December 15, a jazz band concert will be conducted on April 5, and to finish out the year there will be a spring concert on May 18.
When summer ends, Zion Lutheran School begins. The school hosts an annual fall festival, Friday, Oct. 24, featuring food, fun and children’s games.
At Christmas, the Lutheran elementary school presents a special Christmas program to the community in the Mayer Lutheran High School Fine Arts auditorium, in December.
